Ogden mother Erika Carr dies after raising $1M for her children’s future

October 14, 2024 0

OGDEN, Utah (ABC4) — Ogden mother Erika Carr, who had been fighting for life after being diagnosed with a rare terminal cancer, has passed away. People across the country rallied around her, donating over $1 million to her GoFundMe, which had an original goal of only $5,000.

“It is with a heavy heart that this is the final update i will be giving for my cousin Erika. She has joined her mother Sylvia, her Brother JJ, her uncles Chava & Loui on the other side,” Carr’s cousin wrote on social media. “She fought a long and hard battle. She was strong and held on as long as she could for her babies. I know she was so thankful for all of your support and love and prayers.”

Erika Carr, 30, was a single mother of two children — Jeremiah, 7, and Aaliyah, 5. She called them her “whole life, light and soul … and what keeps [her] going.” She was given three months to live, and she decided to spend it with her kids.

On May 7, 2022, Carr was diagnosed with Stage 4 small cell lung carcinoma, a “high-grade neuroendocrine carcinoma,” she stated on her GoFundMe. Her diagnosis came the day before Mother’s Day, and she had been battling for her life for over two years.

Doctors told her, “I hope you have a good support system at home because you’re going to need it, you have a long and hard journey ahead of you.”

Her condition had improved — positive scans giving her the opportunity to stop treatment and see how she progressed. During this time, on Jan. 17, 2024, she developed Cushing’s syndrome — a rare hormonal disorder that occurs when the body is exposed to too much cortisol for an extended period. It had a multitude of difficult impacts on her body, including rapid weight gain and swelling, muscle and bone deterioration, high blood pressure, and Type 2 diabetes.

Though she restarted treatment, on Sept. 18, 2024, doctors told her that she had three months to live. She chose to discontinue treatment and spend that time cherishing her two children.

Carr was given the seemingly impossible task of planning her own funeral, and she decided to create a GoFundMe to help cover the costs. She set a modest goal, asking for only $5,000, hoping that maybe she’d be able to leave some extra money behind for her children.

She received over $1 million.

There have been over 37,000 donations given to her cause. She created a trust fund before her passing, and she said she was thankful her children will be okay when they grow up.

“It happened overnight. I never expected that,” she told ABC4. “I never expected to have a big funeral service, or a lot of people reach out and help me. With the way it’s went, I’m just in shock … just very grateful for everybody and everything that’s been there.”

Nara and Siree

Nothing much is known about Nara and Siree’s love story as the couple maintained a low profile during their courtship. The photographer sharing their pictures wrote, “Today, we’re honored to unveil the engagement of two stars who found love where they least expected it in the midst of shared dreams, hard work, and a passion for their craft.”

Siree recently returned to India after studying abroad and worked with Rohit in Prathinidhi 2, released in April this year. Talking about Rohit while promoting the film, she said, “When I first met him on set, I thought he was so good, looked so innocent. We became good friends. I like Rohit and his movies a lot.”

Earlier this year, she also told the press, “I’ve always wanted to act in films. But my typical Telugu parents wanted me to get married. I asked them for two years because I don’t want to regret not following my passion. I did lots of auditions and now, I’m lucky to be working with Rohit in my first film.”

What is open and closed on Indigenous Peoples’ Day 2024

October 14, 2024 0

On the second Monday of October, Americans will be celebrating Indigenous Peoples’ Day, also known as Columbus Day.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day recognizes the contributions and legacy of those who lived here long before Christopher Columbus erroneously claimed to have discovered America. President Joe Biden formally recognized Indigenous Peoples’ Day in 2021 by signing a proclamation stating that federal policies “systematically sought to assimilate and displace Native people and eradicate Native cultures.”

Some states officially celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day and others commemorate it through proclamations. More than 100 cities have replaced Columbus Day altogether with the holiday.

Many students across the country will be off from school, though others may still have class. Other office workers will also observe the holiday with a day off, but for those who still have errands to run, here’s what’s open and closed on Monday, October 14.

Banks

Monday is a Federal Reserve bank holiday. However, markets will be open – Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange will be trading.

Out of the major US Banks, Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Citibank branches will be closed.

Chase Bank and TD Bank will be open for Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

As always, you can utilize online banking or ATM services.

Mail

The United States Postal Service will be closed and won’t deliver mail or packages.

However, if you need to get mail out, UPS and FedEx will mostly be operating as usual. FedEx Express and FedEx Ground Economy will have modified service. UPS will fully function as normal.

Retail

Most big box retailers, such as Target, Walmart and Kroger, will be open. Make sure to check with local businesses for their operating hours.

Government institutions

Since it’s a government holiday, government buildings will be closed – think the DMV, libraries, courts and offices.

Sam Mitchell doxxes NBA TV co-host after awkward on-air interaction

October 12, 2024 0

Former Minnesota Timberwolves player Sam Mitchell revealed the address of his NBA TV co-host, Chris Miles, Friday night after an awkward on-air interaction where Mitchell was clearly frustrated by comments from Miles.

In a pregame segment on NBA TV ahead of a preseason game between the Golden State Warriors and Sacramento Kings, Miles asked Mitchell, who played 10 of his 13 NBA seasons with the Wolves, his thoughts about Warriors coach Steve Kerr not receiving a gold medal after leading Team USA to a gold medal during the Paris Olympics this summer.

I saw that. Coaches don’t get a medal. I guess it just tells you, (in) international (basketball) how they value coaches. Not at all,” Mitchell said. “How do coaches (not) get a gold medal?”

Miles then took a poke at Mitchell, a former coach of the Toronto Raptors from 2004-8 and interim of the Wolves in 2016.

“I’m surprised coaches get a paycheck for this show,” Miles quipped. “I think like maybe you should do this pro bono.”

That comment clearly frustrated Mitchell and set off over a minute-long uncomfortable interaction between the two.

"You know, last time I looked at my check, it's pretty close (to pro bono)," Mitchell said. "So hey, I'm taking donations. Why don't you come up off some of that money you got since you over there bragging about it?"

Miles responded that he wasn't bragging about anything, and Mitchell continued to press him about supposed rental properties like a beach house in Florida and a townhouse in Georgia. Miles appeared stunned and asked what's going on.

ou want to call me out, I mean, come on," Mitchell said. "You screaming broke and hungry, let's just see it. You know, I know what you have and where you live, young fella, so you need to stop."

Miles fired back that they have "snitches" on the show, though Mitchell referred to it as being a "truth teller." Miles attempted to get back on track to the Kings and Warriors, but Mitchell got one more jab in before they got to NBA talk.

"You gotta stop messing with me on national TV," Mitchell said. "I done told you about that. Do I need to give out the address because you not at home right now?"

The two then finally transitioned to talking about another game between the Los Angeles Clippers and Portland Trail Blazers, which was taking place in Seattle, with Mitchell saying he believes an NBA team should still be in the city.
