As the seal population grows, more are entangled in waste

April 30, 2024 0

The three big seal rescue centres along the Dutch coast have dealt with 35 seals this year, which have become entangled in fishing nets or other litter, the Volkskrant reported on Tuesday.

In an average year, the centres help some 40 seals in total.

The problem is particularly an issue for young seals who “grow” into whatever they have become caught up in.  “It does not expand with them and that leads to fatal trauma to the airways and blood vessels,” said Emmy Venema, from the Pieterburen seal centre. “It is a very slow, painful death.”

More seals are being hurt by waste because the Dutch seal population is increasing. The number of grey seals in the Wadden Sea has risen 12% over the past five years to around 10,500. They share the sandbanks with over 22,600 ordinary seals, according to researchers at Wageningen University.

Horror as sword-wielding suspect goes on rampage: Two police officers and passerby attacked after car driven into home in Hainault - as man, 36, is arrested

April 30, 2024 0

man has been arrested after three people were attacked with a sword in a ‘terrifying’ rampage this morning.

Two police officers and a member of the public were injured after reports a car had driven into a home in Hainault, east London, shortly before 7am on Tuesday.

Horrifying footage posted on social media appears to show a sword-wielding suspect wearing a yellow hoodie as he prowled the streets and crouched beside homes.

Metropolitan Police later confirmed a 36-year-old man had been arrested. They are not looking for more suspects in relation to the ordeal and the attack ‘does not appear to be terror-related’, police said.

Locals told MailOnline how they woke to sounds of ‘piercing screams’ and a man ‘covered in blood’ outside their homes in the Thurlow Gardens area.

Visitors to Remembrance Day ceremony will need ticket

April 30, 2024 0

People who want to be present at the May 4 Remembrance Day ceremony on Dam square in Amsterdam must have a reservation, organisers Nationaal Comité 4 en 5 Mei have said.

The measure is a result of a decision by Amsterdam mayor Femke Halsema to tighten up security at the event, during which the Netherlands remembers the Dutch who died in World War II and subsequent wars.

The measures include allowing fewer people into the area around the Dam due to “heightened tensions in society and greater readiness by campaigners to take action,” Halsema said last week.

Some 10,000 people instead of the usual 20,000 will now be allowed to attend. The reservation is also meant to make room for “vulnerable people” who come from outside the city and who may have trouble finding a spot.

As part of the more stringent safety measures every visitor will be searched upon arrival and all flags and other political symbols will be confiscated. According to the Parool, t shirts with the slogan “free Palestine” will also be banned, even though, according to experts, there is no legal basis to do so.

The main ceremony, attended by the king and queen, takes place on the Dam but there are hundreds of others all over the country.
