Andrew Garfield Recalls How Jessica Chastain ‘Rearranged’ Filming So He Could See His Mom Before She Died

THE LAWYERS October 19, 2024 0

Andrew Garfield is forever “very grateful” for his time with Jessica Chastain while they filmed The Eyes of Tammy Faye in 2019.

The We Live in Time actor, 41, recalled in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE how Chastain, 47, ensured he got to spend time with his mother, Lynn Garfield, during her final days before she died of pancreatic cancer.

“What was amazing was that [Searchlight Pictures’ David Greenbaum] and Jessica rearranged the schedule last-minute — put filming on hold [in North Carolina] for a few days so that I could go back [to England] and be with my mom for 10 days,” Andrew told PEOPLE.

Andrew also remembered what their fellow Eyes of Tammy Faye costar Vincent D'Onofrio said to him at the time.

“Because he had his own experience with a loss that he wasn't able to make it back for, he said, ‘Go. You got to go.’ And I was like, ‘Well, I know I've got to go and thank you,’ ” he added.

The Amazing Spider-Man star also recalled that while filming the drama about the rise and fall of late American evangelist Tammy Faye Messner, Chastain would pick him up and they would drive to Heritage USA, the now-closed Christian theme park created by Messner and her preacher husband, Jim Bakker.

“It was a beautiful ritual. Every Sunday, we would go down there. And it was a combination of trying to commune with the spirit of Jim and Tammy and the place where they set up their temple, in a way, to their god but also to themselves,” said Andrew, who portrayed Jim opposite Chastain's Tammy.

Since Heritage USA had closed and been transformed into a “different evangelical, more progressive rock music kind of church,” Andrew remembered, he and Chastain would attend services there. The trips turned into a way for them to do hands-on research for their movie.

“It became a bit of a detective pursuit because there were people, like security guards and people there who used to work for Jim and Tammy,” he said. “So we were able to get access to more information, and so it was really funny and it was very deep.”

He added of his time with Chastain, “We would have deep conversations, because we were both getting to know each other as people. I'm really very grateful for that time with her because it was the time when my mum was really sick and ultimately passed away.”

Following Lynn's death at age 69, Andrew described his mom as the “the purest angel” and recalled their final days together.

“The good news about me and her is that we left nothing unsaid,” he told Variety in 2021. “We had all the quality time we could possibly have while she was here. And those last two weeks I got to be with her were probably the most profound two weeks of my life.”

“To be with her and my dad and my brother, all of her friends, my nephews,” he added. “It was full of grace in the midst of the terrible tragedy.”

Netflix stock surges after earnings, subscriber growth top estimates

THE LAWYERS October 18, 2024 0

Netflix (NFLX) stock opened more than 8% higher on Friday after the streaming giant beat third quarter EPS and revenue estimates, and projected sales for the current quarter that came in ahead of Wall Street's expectations.

Revenue beat Bloomberg consensus estimates of $9.78 billion to hit $9.83 billion in Q3, Netflix reported after the market close on Thursday, an increase of 15% compared to the same period last year. The growth came as the streamer continued to lean on revenue initiatives like its crackdown on password sharing and ad-supported tier, in addition to last year's price hikes on certain subscription plans.

Netflix guided to fourth quarter revenue of $10.13 billion, a beat compared to consensus estimates of $10.01 billion.

For full-year 2025, the company sees revenue hitting between $43 billion and $44 billion, compared to consensus estimates of $43.4 billion. This would represent growth of 11% to 13% from the company's expected 2024 revenue guidance of $38.9 billion.

It expects full-year operating margins to hit 27%, an increase from the previous 26%, after the metric hit nearly 30% in the third quarter.

Diluted earnings per share (EPS) also beat estimates in the quarter, with the company reporting EPS of $5.40, above consensus expectations of $5.16 and well ahead of the $3.73 EPS figure it reported in the year-ago period. Netflix guided to fourth quarter EPS of $4.23, ahead of consensus calls for $3.90.

Subscribers also came in strong with another 5 million-plus subscribers added on the heels of breakout programming like "The Perfect Couple" and "Nobody Wants This."

Subscriber additions of 5.07 million beat expectations of 4.5 million and follows the 8.05 million net additions the streamer added in the second quarter. The company had added 8.8 million paying users in Q3 2023.

"We expect paid net additions to be higher in Q4 than in Q3’24 due to normal seasonality and a strong content slate," the company said, citing upcoming releases like "Squid Game" Season 2, the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson fight, and two NFL games on Christmas Day.

Investors have praised the company's foray into sports and live events. Meanwhile, its ad tier continues to gain traction, accounting for over 50% of sign-ups in the countries where it's offered during the third quarter.

"We continue to build our advertising business and improve our offering for advertisers," the company said in the earnings release. "Ads membership was up 35% quarter on quarter, and our ad tech platform is on track to launch in Canada in Q4 and more broadly in 2025."

Progressive price target raised to $273 from $268 at BMO Capital

THE LAWYERS October 18, 2024 0

To get a sense of who is truly in control of Sysco Corporation (NYSE:SYY), it is important to understand the ownership structure of the business. With 86% stake, institutions possess the maximum shares in the company. That is, the group stands to benefit the most if the stock rises (or lose the most if there is a downturn).

Since institutional have access to huge amounts of capital, their market moves tend to receive a lot of scrutiny by retail or individual investors. Hence, having a considerable amount of institutional money invested in a company is often regarded as a desirable trait.

In the chart below, we zoom in on the different ownership groups of Sysco.

View our latest analysis for Sysco

ownership-breakdown
NYSE:SYY Ownership Breakdown October 18th 2024

What Does The Institutional Ownership Tell Us About Sysco?

Many institutions measure their performance against an index that approximates the local market. So they usually pay more attention to companies that are included in major indices.

Sysco already has institutions on the share registry. Indeed, they own a respectable stake in the company. This implies the analysts working for those institutions have looked at the stock and they like it. But just like anyone else, they could be wrong. When multiple institutions own a stock, there's always a risk that they are in a 'crowded trade'. When such a trade goes wrong, multiple parties may compete to sell stock fast. This risk is higher in a company without a history of growth. You can see Sysco's historic earnings and revenue below, but keep in mind there's always more to the story.

earnings-and-revenue-growth
NYSE:SYY Earnings and Revenue Growth October 18th 2024

Since institutional investors own more than half the issued stock, the board will likely have to pay attention to their preferences. Hedge funds don't have many shares in Sysco. The company's largest shareholder is The Vanguard Group, Inc., with ownership of 11%. For context, the second largest shareholder holds about 7.6% of the shares outstanding, followed by an ownership of 5.0% by the third-largest shareholder.

A closer look at our ownership figures suggests that the top 22 shareholders have a combined ownership of 51% implying that no single shareholder has a majority.

While it makes sense to study institutional ownership data for a company, it also makes sense to study analyst sentiments to know which way the wind is blowing. There are plenty of analysts covering the stock, so it might be worth seeing what they are forecasting, too.

Insider Ownership Of Sysco

While the precise definition of an insider can be subjective, almost everyone considers board members to be insiders. Company management run the business, but the CEO will answer to the board, even if he or she is a member of it.

Insider ownership is positive when it signals leadership are thinking like the true owners of the company. However, high insider ownership can also give immense power to a small group within the company. This can be negative in some circumstances.

Our information suggests that Sysco Corporation insiders own under 1% of the company. As it is a large company, we'd only expect insiders to own a small percentage of it. But it's worth noting that they own US$79m worth of shares. Arguably recent buying and selling is just as important to consider. You can click here to see if insiders have been buying or selling.

General Public Ownership

With a 14% ownership, the general public, mostly comprising of individual investors, have some degree of sway over Sysco. While this size of ownership may not be enough to sway a policy decision in their favour, they can still make a collective impact on company policies.

The Enigmatic Life and Legacy of Megan Ruth Marshack

THE LAWYERS October 17, 2024 0

She was always there, next to former Vice President Nelson Rockefeller. She is Megan Ruth Marshack who died at 70 from liver and kidney failure. And she, at 25, was there with him when he died, on January 26, 1979, two years after leaving the vice presidency, at 70 as well from a heart attack.

The two were alone at home, in a house owned by Rockefeller in Manhattan and not at the Rockefeller Center where he worked. She had to dodge quite a few headlines and tabloid stories that greatly embroidered her special relationship with Rockefeller. What everyone unequivocally defined as a love that lasted years. She never spoke about it. She left only a somewhat enigmatic phrase in her funeral announcement (written in her own hand): "I will not forget, I will not regret what I did for love."

Her obituary appears on the website of the Sacramento funeral agency that handled her funeral arrangements.

Meghan Marshack was known as the inseparable press aide of the vice president and 1976 was her last year in office. Upon returning to private life in New York, however, she continued to work for him as director of his art collection and as coordinator of his books and reproductions.

After Rockefeller died of a heart attack in 1979, she returned to her radio career. Marshack worked for CBS News until 1998, covering the Sarajevo Winter Olympics in 1984, the trial of the attempted assassin of Pope John Paul II, and dozens of other stories. She was the producer of "Memories of Vietnam" with the late CBS correspondent Ed Bradley: a documentary of reminiscences by cameramen, sound engineers, producers, and reporters ten years after the fall of Saigon.

"Putin has a new girlfriend", who is the 39-year-old Ekaterina Mizulina nicknamed "Barbie"

The First Meeting with Rockefeller

During a Rockefeller press conference in 1975 in Los Angeles, Marshack met the former governor of New York. "Señor Vice President..." Rockefeller paused, then responded in Spanish: "Un momento, por favor." "No, ahora, por favor," Marshack asked. "Yes?" Rockefeller asked kindly. "Now, regarding New York City," Marshack continued in English. All the journalists present in the room burst into laughter. She and Rockefeller left the press conference together. She was granted a farewell radio interview when Rockefeller was not chosen by President Ford to run for the 1976 office. Weeks later Rockefeller offered her a job.

Martha Stewart Reveals She Cheated on Ex-Husband Andy Stewart in the Most Jaw-Dropping Way

THE LAWYERS October 17, 2024 0

In the trailer for her upcoming documentary Martha—which drops on Netflix Oct. 30—the lifestyle guru revealed that she cheated on her ex-husband Andy Stewart early on in their relationship.

"Young women, listen to my advice," Martha said in the trailer. "If you're married and your husband starts to cheat on you, he's a piece of s--t."

A producer off-camera could be heard asking the 83-year-old about her own affair, to which Martha responded, "Yeah, but I don't think Andy ever knew about that."

Martha and Andy were married in 1961 before separating in 1987 and finalizing their divorce in 1990. The couple shares daughter Alexis Stewart, 59.

E! News has reached out to Andy for comment but has not heard back.

Elsewhere in the trailer, Martha muses on what is more important in life, "A marriage? Or a career?" But as she noted, she's not sure of what the correct answer is.

One thing the former daytime host does know is that she has no regrets about where her life has taken her.

"I coulda just been a miserable, has-been housewife," she said. "But I didn't let that happen to myself. And I'm so happy I didn't."

Following her split from Andy, Martha briefly dated Anthony Hopkins, although as she explained on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2022, she unfortunately had to break up with him after watching Silence of Lambs and being unable to get his portrayal of cannibal Hannibal Lecter out of her head.

She also dated tech billionaire Charles Simonyi on and off for 15 years, but they split in 2008. And although Martha hasn't been publicly linked to anyone since, she's not opposed to finding a new romantic partner.

"I know a lot of eligible men," she told E! News in 2023. "I think they really want a woman who will take care of them, so I'm still not quite in the position where I can take care of a man full-time because I work too much."

Martha Stewart, Netflix, 2024 movie release datesNetflix

She added, "If I analyze my life, I think the work has taken precedence over the romance. I have a hard time making room for both and it's not the highest priority that I have a boyfriend, but it would be nice!"

But two red flags that would stop any romance dead in its tracks: bad breath and a lack of generosity.

And if she were to go out on a date again, the podcast host would expect some seriously over the top outings, like helicoptering and yachting.
