ack Smith court filing against Trump and Israel strikes central Beirut: Morning Rundown

October 03, 2024 0

Former President Donald Trump was acting as a private candidate for office, not as the president of the United States, when he sought to overturn his 2020 election loss and “resorted to crimes to stay in office,” a new filing from special counsel Jack Smith asserts.

The filing, released yesterday, is connected to Trump’s federal election case and is a response to the Supreme Court’s presidential immunity ruling. It includes new details about Trump’s actions after the 2020 election and leading up to the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol, including testimony detailing Trump’s conversations with former Vice President Mike Pence. In one discussion on Nov. 12, Pence offered Trump a “face-saving option,” telling him to not concede the election “but recognize the process is over.”

Other revelations include analysis from an FBI expert that showed Trump was scrolling Twitter during the Capitol riot, as well as new evidence that an unnamed assistant overheard Trump saying to family members after the 2020 election, “It doesn’t matter if you won or lost the election. You still have to fight like hell.”

Smith’s team once again argued that Trump knew his statements about the 2020 election were, in fact, lies and said he relied upon his own campaign employees and volunteers to carry out the alleged scheme.

Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung blasted the “falsehood-ridden” filing and declared the case a “partisan, Unconstitutional Witch Hunt.”

Israel prepares Iran response and strikes central Beirut as Lebanon faces ‘apocalyptic’ situation

Israel kept up its bombardment of Beirut after Iran launched its second, and largest, attack on Israel in months, which prompted Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to warn Tehran would pay.

Israeli strikes in the heart of the Lebanese capital of Beirut killed at least nine people and wounded seven overnight, health officials said. The strikes hit the neighborhood of Bachoura, which is within walking distance of the prime minister’s headquarters, as well as many foreign embassies. Three people were immediately killed while three more died afterward from their injuries, the country’s Ministry of Health said.

An “apocalyptic” situation is mounting across Lebanon, healthcare workers have warned, with some 1.2 million people displaced and many sleeping on the streets of Beirut. One U.S. permanent resident is among the dead, and about 100 U.S. citizens and their families left last night on an evacuation flight as other countries announced their own plans.

Israel is also preparing its response to Iran’s missile attack earlier this week, Israeli and U.S. officials say.

North Carolina mountain town is wrecked by Helene

The death toll from Hurricane Helene and its aftermath rose to 190 people across Southeastern states, according to an NBC News tally, and hundreds of people are still missing. Thursday marks a week since the storm first made landfall in Florida before traveling through parts of Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee, leaving destruction in its wake. For residents of Swannanoa, North Carolina, about 20 miles east of Asheville, the shock is still raw.

NBC News reporter Deon Hampton spoke to residents of the small mountain town. Brown mud coated the few buildings still standing, he noted. Many other structures were reduced to splinters. And whenever the wind kicked up, the smell of dust and dirt filled nostrils.

“I don’t think anybody, including the government, thought this was what we were gonna get,” said Beverly Eller, 68, who has been staying in shelters after she and her husband narrowly escaped floodwaters in their home. Meanwhile, Stewart Cody, who owns a local body repair shop, estimated it’ll take months to reopen his shop. And without insurance, the damage is going to cost him dearly. Read the full story.

Tungnath Temple, Lord Shiva's highest temple built by Pandavas, faces water leakage

October 02, 2024 0

Tungnath Temple, the highest temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, is facing severe structural issues that threaten its safety and stability. Located at an altitude of 3,680 metres in Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag district, the temple has experienced increased water leakage, subsidence, and a weakening foundation, particularly.

during the recent monsoon season. This situation has raised alarms for both devotees and tourists who visit the ancient site, believed to have been built by the Pandavas after the Kurukshetra war.

Structural Challenges

The ongoing heavy rainfall has significantly accelerated damage to the temple. Ajendra Ajay, the head of the Badrinath Kedarnath Temple Committee, has highlighted the critical condition of the temple. He stated, "The temple is facing serious issues like subsidence, weakening foundation, and shifting wall slates, which have caused water leakage, especially during the rainy season."

To address these challenges, the committee has reached out to the Geological Survey of India (GSI) and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to explore potential restoration methods. Both organisations dispatched expert teams to the site in September to assess the damage and recommend steps to mitigate further deterioration.

Government Action

Tourism minister Satpal Maharaj addressed the issue, stating, "Given the temple's water leakage and structural problems, the govt is prioritising its repair to ensure the structure remains safe for all visitors."

As the temple committee works with experts and government officials, the urgency of restoration efforts has become clear to protect this revered site for future generations.

What we know about Pete Rose's death and final days

October 01, 2024 0

Cincinnati Reds legend Pete Rose was found dead at his home Monday in Clark County, Nevada, according to officials there.

The Clark County coroner's office could not immediately be reached and the county spokeswoman who confirmed Rose's death provided no other details, including the cause of death. ABC News reported that a family member found Rose and said the county medical examiner indicated there were no signs of foul play.

Pete Rose, who died Monday at his home in Nevada, at a press conference in 2015 at the Pete Rose Sports Bar and Grill in Las Vegas. The ABC News report also said Rose, 83, had not been in the care of a doctor at the time of his death. Rose's home is being examined and the cause of death remains under investigation.

Although there was no indication Rose had been seriously ill at the time of his death, Rose said in 2018 court filings connected to his divorce that he was "in poor health and disabled." In that same divorce case, Rose's lawyers said he struggled to walk, was on blood thinners and had undergone three heart procedures in five years.

"

His health is deteriorating," the court documents said.

Despite those health problems, Rose maintained a busy schedule and continued to travel all over the country, often to sports memorabilia shows. A Facebook post Monday from the Music City Sports Collectibles and Autograph Show in Tennessee featured a photograph taken Sunday of Rose sitting in a wheelchair, surrounded by several of his teammates from his days in Cincinnati with the Big Red Machine.

He died the next day. "Amazing that they all got to see each other one last time," the post said.

Earlier this year, in April, Rose canceled an appearance at former UC basketball coach Bob Huggins' annual fish fry charitable fundraiser in West Virginia "due to health reasons," according to a post on the event's Facebook account. "We're sending Pete our warmest wishes for a full & speedy recovery," the post said.

The Cincinnati Reds also confirmed Rose's death in a statement late Monday. “Our hearts are deeply saddened by the news of Pete’s passing,” said Reds' owner Bob Castellini. “He was one of the fiercest competitors the game has ever seen, and every team he played for was better because of him. Pete was a Red through and through. No one loved the game more than Pete and no one loved Pete more than Reds Country.”

Though the all-time hits leader began his record-breaking career in Cincinnati and won two World Series titles here, he had lived in Nevada for years, near Las Vegas, where he owned a now-closed bar and frequently made paid public appearances and signed baseball memorabilia.

Pete Rose HBO documentary

He recently was the subject of an HBO documentary about his life on and off the field, including his ban from baseball for betting on the game. In an interview with The Enquirer in June, Rose reflected on that life, the consequences of his gambling and his own mortality.

“What, are they waiting for me to die?” Rose said of his chances of getting into the Hall of Fame. “Wouldn’t that be horrible if I died next week and then next year they reinstated me?”

Rose's legacy also was on his mind in his last post on the social media site X on Sept. 21. The man known to fans as Charlie Hustle wrote about his grandson, a baseball player at La Salle High School, who'd recently been featured in a Philadelphia newspaper article. "Couldn't be more proud of my grandson," Rose wrote. "Keep hustling with La Salle baseball. The #Rose legacy lives on.

According to social media posts connected to Rose, he visited Cincinnati as recently as Aug. 14, when his agent posted a photo of Rose giving a thumbs up in front of the statue at Great American Ball Park depicting his iconic head-first slide.

"It was great to proudly stand with him by his legendary headfirst slide statue in the hometown of the Hit King," his agent wrote.
